Did anyone hear HiMY talk before critical mass last month?
I'm sure most here know, HimY SYeD is running for mayor. His bike plan is admirable, but he's suffering from the usual fringe candidate exposure issues.
Anyways, he was talking to the assembly of cyclists before mass last month. He said that he was going to be elected mayor because he was going to get all of the 500000 members of his religion in Toronto to vote for him.
This is a terrible thing to say, and it totally discredits him as a candidate.
- Assuming that everyone will vote for you because you share a common attribute is undemocratic. It assumes a lack of other considerations, and thought about voting in general. It ignores that people are multi-dimensional.
- We shouldn't have a mayor who was elected with a religiously motivated base. This presumes a religious mandate. This is incompatible with politics (perhaps forming a second non-overlapping magisterium) and also somewhat dystopian. It brings to mind visions of America under George Bush, or The Handmaid's Tale.
- It's wrong to promote people based on membership of groups that aren't relevant to the job.
So with the one comment, he went from being a fringe candidate that I'd consider voting for if he was competitive, to being someone I am really happy is a fringe candidate.
