Scarborough cyclist run down

From the Scarborough Mirror:

At 6:39 a.m. Thursday, a cyclist was rear-ended by a Plymouth Voyager van in the eastbound curb lane of Ellesmere about 100 metres west of Midland.
"The cyclist was thrown into the windshield," Smith said. "Then he was thrown forward about 20 feet."
The cyclist, a 41-year-old man, wasn't wearing a helmet and suffered head, neck and back injuries.
The 74-year-old van driver wasn't hurt. He has been charged with careless driving.

To understand the circumstances:
* it's still dark at that hour
* the road is six lanes wide with a speed limit of 60km/hr. Typical traffic speed would be about 70 with the odd vehicle going even faster.

He went into the windshield and then was ejected forwards 20 feet... awful. At least I know what to expect if hit by some old guy going 70km/h+.

I'd say the sidewalk is looking a bit safer everyday but..

According to police, the 50-year-old driver got out of her SUV to speak with the victim but he was unconscious. The driver then returned to the vehicle and left the scene. She turned herself in to police a short time later."

What the hell were you thinking lady?

"oh stop faking it you big baby! if you don't get off the ground this instant i'm leaving!"

What a nut job, take her license away for good. Hopefully there is jail time involved here, we shouldn't tolerate this level of callousness.

...as you'll be clobbered a few hundred feet further down by someone turning into one of the frequent strip malls or a side road. And then you'll not only be blamed for not wearing a helmet but also for riding where you are not supposed to be.

Naw, the city has to provide bike lanes in the suburban arterials, as the bike plan outlines. Don't give them an excuse to futz around for another 10 years and delay....

Given the horrific nature of the crime, the criminal was only charged with careless driving? It should have been dangerous driving. That's good for up to five years in jail, an appropriate penalty given the nature of this serious crime of violen
