Fatal collision in Markham

Does anyone have more info on what had happened? I have no faith that the papers will give us more than today's Star:

A cyclist hit by a van at an intersection in Markham has been pronounced dead.

Police say the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. Monday at 16th Ave. and Rodick Rd., just east of Woodbine.

The intersection was closed for several hours as the traffic unit investigated.

The cyclist has yet to be identified.

The intersection is at the light of a major exurban arterial: http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q...

The only other piece of information that I have is that the cyclist was 66 years old (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2010/07/27/toronto-...)

I have not seen anything in my local media, including the yorkregion.com website, and nothing has been put up on the York Region Police site.

I'm particularly chilled by this sad news, as I ride through this intersection 8-10 times a week on my way to and from work. I last rode through there yesterday evening at 5:30.

Let's keep a sense of humour when we come across some typist's blunders: CP24 comes up with the surprising news that a cellist was involved:

Intersection looks illuminated, multiple street lights.

Another case of "I didn't see him" yet the motorist drove straight into him.

That had to be a very aggressive left-turn, i'm betting the light was stale and the motorist was trying to beat it.

THUD.

Motorists often trumpet safety first to cyclists, yet we are not the ones in a rush piloting the heavy machinery amongst flesh and blood.

If you're driving today, take an extra look to make sure the oncoming lane is clear before you turn left and don't worry about that guy behind you honking... he won't stick around to help clean up the mess or admit to harassing you, he is a nobody, you are the one in charge of your car.
