Saw A Wonderful Sight Today

On College, just east of St. George on the north side, a FedEx truck stopped in the right lane, but NOT in the bike lane. He actually left the bike lane completely untouched, allowing cyclists to travel freely. Of course, half a block away was a Purolater truck also delivering to Uof T parked in the bike lane, straddling the right motor-vehicle lane, meaning he thought it was wiser to block not one lane, but two. And a short distance away was a Canada Post truck doing the same thing. Props to FedeX and that driver, in particular. Shame on the others.

I find it rather unnerving to pass any stopped vehicle on the right hand side. If they stop at the curb the remainder of the lane isn't generally wide enough for another vehicle to pass anyway, allowing the cyclist space to pass on the left. What I don't like is the ones that as you say don't make up their mind and end up blocking both the bike lane and adjacent lane to drivers. It also seems safer for unloading to be adjacent to the curb.

It appeared to be such a conscious effort by the driver to not stop in the bike lane, that it was safe to pass on the right. Obviously, he was well aware of the bike lane and chose to leave it unobstructed. The other two fully blocked the bike lane and half of the regular lane. While there isn't enough room for a car to occupy only half a lane, it is College street and cabs constantly straddle the line taking up half of both lanes as they pass stopped trucks, so it is very dangerous for us cyclists to try and pass on the left in the same space cabs feel free to whiz by in. The way the FedEx guy was stopped, it forced all other motor traffic to fully change lanes to pass.
