The Cyclocross provincials will be taking place in Riverdale Park East. As Chris Bouchard of the City's Cycling Department notes, "Should be wicked."

They're working on getting thing together:

  • 30ft beer tent where riders go through at speed
  • vendors permit for the sale of "100's" of vintage wool jerseys
  • cowbells on sale for 1$
  • hot dog/sausage vending
  • free Jet Fuel coffee for everyone
  • and a Polish band!

Chills and thrills and spills! Personally I'll be showing up for the Polish band and sausage.

Looks like the City is getting a bit more creative with bike projects. I was sent this artist call for bike murals through the Mayor's Clean and Beautiful City campaign. It doesn't have a deadline given so contact them sooner rather than later to find out if you can still get your mural idea done. It also mentions the zones but doesn't provide the map. I was told that the recommended wards (where approval is most likely) are: Etobicoke High Park, Parkdale High Park, and the Keel and Lawrence Area. If that works for you, send your idea in!

Bicycles are a great source of exercise, contributing to overall health and wellness. It's also a fun cheap and efficient way to get around town. With over a million occasional cyclists in the GTA, cycling also represents a valuable component of Toronto’s overall transportation mix. Cycling alleviates traffic congestion, and does not contribute to climate change or low level smog and air pollution.

The City of Toronto’s Cycling Outreach and Events Programs are offering grants to individuals who would like to paint a community mural with a Bicycle theme.

Step 1:
Please see the City Ward Maps below for the zones that are currently accepting project proposals.

Step 2:
Go for a bike ride and figure out the desired location of your mural project.

Step 3:
Write a description of the site you want, and take 4-6 pics of it.

Step 4:
Do a sketch of the Bike Mural you are envisaging.

Step 4:
Who owns the wall you would like to paint on. If it is a public space the city may be able to help to secure it for your project. If it is a privately owned business, ask permission. Staff from the Clean and beautiful Project may also be able to help you. You will need written permission from the property owner before painting or you won’t be eligible for the grant.

Step 5:
Submit the stuff you have together to the Toronto Cycling Events and Outreach office, for review.

Applications do not qualify automatically and are subject to a jury. Upon completion of the Toronto Bike Mural Project, a bike tour will be organized visiting the mural sites city-wide. For more information about this program, contact cyclingevents@toronto.ca or phone 416-392-7592

Councillor Heaps is gonna ask city council to overturn the public works committee's decision to scrap the bike lanes on Annette St for a "compromise" solution of sharrows.

Next week, Toronto city council - in an effort led by Councillor Adrian Heaps, the cycling committee chairman - may be asked to overturn what some call a compromise that scrapped bike lanes for this stretch of road, now a symbolic battleground for cycling activists who are urging supporters to bombard councillors with e-mails.

Heaps really wants to reach his 50 kilometre goal. He's almost there:

Mr. Heaps, who has streamlined the bike-lane approval process to try to keep local councillors from gumming them up, says he will reach his goal of building 50.5 kilometres of new bike lanes this year. So far, only about 38 km have actually been approved.

Councillor Saundercook, member of the public works committee, and the councillor for that ward, is taking it personally: if Heaps is going to make it an issue about cyclists and not Saundercook's re-electibility than Saundercook will try to derail the entire bike lane approval process. Mental note to self: campaign against Saundercook in 2010.

Mr. Saundercook warns any intervention from Mr. Heaps on Annette could threaten his support for other bike lanes: "If you're going to jam it down my throat, then we're going to go a whole different way.'"
