2007. A Good Year For Cycling in Toronto?
So, how was your year on two wheels this year? I had fun although I wonder where all those promised bike lanes are. Eh, Mr. Heaps?
Next year? Right.
Happy Holidays.
Ride on,
Tino

Bulletin from the Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation, November 23 2007:
November 23 Urgent Action Needed: Write to the City's Executive Committee
The push to increase funding for cycling infrastructure continues!
Tonight the City of Toronto is hosting a public meeting for the West District Design Initiative. This initiative is a large scale re-design of three important parts of Etobicoke:
Bayview Avenue is making a small step, at least politically, towards bike friendliness. Local cyclists, including those from the Sunnybrook hospital BUG, ICES, have been discussing the needs of the area with staff and the city councillor, Cliff Jenkins. Less than a month ago, a cyclist died in a collision on Bayview Avenue. Daniel Egan has reported back to the local cyclists that Bayview Avenue is being "considered" for bike lanes next year. In his words:
"In fact, Bayview is in the Bike Plan and we are considering including it in next year's program."
A couple days ago I wrote about the restructuring of the cycling commitee, in a blog entry called: Happy Bike Week! And, here's a sharp stick in the eye...
Then, my I Bike TO colleague Darren received some comments back from Councillor Heaps, the new chair, that can be read here.
Some of the answers (below) that he provided to me are similar.
I know a lot of questions have been asked of Councillor Heaps in the past few days. I took a moment to ask a few short questions I had on my mind. One issue that seemed to be coming up in online discussion was the idea of where new infrastructure might be placed. Would this lead to more focus on the long neglected suburban infrastructure? Will these changes to the committee make a difference? As Martin Koob pointed out, it's the mayor and council that are responsible for implementing the Bike Plan, not the TCC.
