Boosting cycling and walking key to solving transit woes

Tue, 09/03/2013 - 10:08 by herb

The following article is a reprint of an article by Albert Koehl, an environmental lawyer and cycling advocate. He was on the Ontario Chief Coroner's stakeholder panel for cycling safety.

By process of elimination, simple means of getting around like walking and cycling must be looking increasingly attractive to Ontario's provincial and municipal politicians as they struggle to fund new
transit to unclog roads.

What a close pass feels like

Sun, 05/12/2013 - 23:42 by locutas_of_spragge

As the title on the video says: this video is not about blame. It's about what a close pass feels like on a bicycle. It's a plea for motorists to allow at least a meter when passing a cyclist. I think it may help to make a case for legislation, proposed in Ontario and enacted in a number of American states and elsewhere, to require motorists to give cyclists a meter, more or less, of space.

A three foot passing rule would also protect motorists by changing the assumptions that govern driving. It would discourage risky passes.

A sweet video. Now how are they going to actually get people to ride their bikes? Maybe some proper bike infrastructure?

Tweeting while Cycling: a look at election tweets

Tue, 10/26/2010 - 16:41 by herb

Whatever the political spin about "mandates" and "working together", Toronto cyclists this morning have been feeling mighty bruised (at least one literally who was doored) by a divisive and ant-bike Ford win. That hasn't stopped them from the pithy tweets. See for yourself:

bad door prize this morn. bike is destroyed. spent 4 hours at hosp/55 division. no broken bones. feel like ive been thru a war. #biketo

Toronto cycling on Wikipedia

Wed, 01/28/2009 - 13:22 by herb

A Wikipedia page on Cycling in Toronto has popped up (thanks to yours truly). With insufficient reference to cycling in the Transportation in Toronto page it's good to get a dedicated page for cycling information in Toronto.

Ask Mr. Bike

Thu, 07/12/2007 - 12:34 by tino

I first met Mr. Bike a.k.a. Chicago's legendary Dave Glowacz a few years ago during Bike Week. He simply showed up in Toronto to check out what ARC and others were up to during Bike Week. We talked for awhile at CBN's Parking Meter Party. I instantly liked him. Passionate, intelligent and insightful.

He has written several great book on cycling in urban areas like Urban Bikers' Tips and Tricks

Toronto Cyclists Memorial

Mon, 05/28/2007 - 17:05 by tino

Memorial by Jordan Lyndel with help from other artists. Located at Wallace and Campbell in front of Yasi's Place. A white ribbon for every Toronto Cyclist killed in traffic since 1996 was added to the installation in their memory. Jordan would like to encourage all to add a ribbon for other fallen cyclists. Gets my vote for most thoughtful and beautiful Bike Week event this year.
