Wilket Creek Path Repair?

Wilket Creek Path Damage Tuesday's storm gave us all a reminder of the raw power of nature. There have already been a few big storms this year. Since our bike paths often run near rivers, heavy downpours can have an impact on our favorite car-free routes.

Some of us are probably old enough to remember the storm back in July of 2005 when the pathway along Wilket Creek, near Edwards Gardens, was washed away. This is the path that parallels Leslie Street between Eglinton and Lawrence, and connects to the Don River path.

The issue was reported in the August 2005 Cyclometer. In 2006, Bike Lane Diary featured photographs of the damage.

When I rode this path last fall, the unpaved area was actually sand. Unless you have a mountain bike with wide tires, you have to walk your bike to get past this. If you've been there recently, feel free to share how it looks now, or send a photograph.

On June 4th, at 7 PM, an open house will be held to discuss "upcoming remedial construction work (for information only)". If you're interested in seeing this repaired, you may like to attend. It sounds like they'd like it to be a downloading of information to the public, but it never hurts to let the city see who these problems affect.

A few more details on the event.

Thanks to Veronica P. for the image.

Wilkett Creek

As of a week ago, the Wilkett Creek bike path has a gap about 20 meters long with nothing but sand; my street bike couldn't make it through, and I had to walk. FYI, the city has the path around the Don bridges south of Eglinton well and truly torn up as well, so cyclists have to share the path over the two humped bridges with pedestrians.
