City spring cleaning derelict bikes

  1. Home

Take this as a warning. If you parked your bike outside for the winter and some jerk took your wheel or seat, the City will now take the rest of the bike unless you park it indoors. Save your bike, or donate it to the Community Bicycle Network or Bike Pirates before the City throws it in the garbage.

From the City's Cyclometer newsletter:

The cycling public should be aware that the annual sweep of abandoned derelict bicycles from the City's post-and-rings is now underway. Post-and-rings are short-term parking, and those derelict bikes left locked to them for months at a time must be removed as they take up much-needed parking spots. Normally bikes are tagged by Bylaw officers for removal in seven days, but in order to complete a spring cleaning of post-and-rings, Right of Way Management enforcement staff will be patrolling the main streets and initiating enforcement on the removal of derelict bikes.

Would some co-op want them?

Would some co-op want them? If so, why wouldn't the City donate those bikes? Seems like such a waste to just throw them out. Some of them are probably salvageable, or at least useful for parts.

Agreed. I'm surprised none

Agreed. I'm surprised none of the co-ops have worked out some kind of deal with them. Or, perhaps they've tried and the city refused?

I heard that the derelict

I heard that the derelict bikes are stored in a warehouse for 6 months before they are thrown out for good. Is this true? Does anyone know more about this? Maybe then community groups can go in and acquire those bikes.

Donations

Getting ones hands on anything from the city can be tough, and this is no exception. The city, TTC and Police get their hands on hundreds of bikes every year seized from city property and crime scenes(ahem, Igor) but they have little interest in putting these machines back into the community.

If someone wants to write a proposal on our behalf and petition the city/ttc/cops to donate these bikes it would be a welcome help, but we probably wouldn't get our hopes up....remotely. Previous efforts have gotten us nowhere.

Take care of your bikes! Don't abandon them just because it's winter!

So they'll just take the bike

So they'll just take the bike if it has no wheel or seat? But I often remove my quick-release seat when I lock my bike, to prevent it from being stolen, and I know people who sometimes take quick-release front wheel with them when they lock their bike outside! The City is worse than the bike thieves!

Abandoned

The City only removes abandoned bikes from Ring & Post lock-ups, the bikes are tagged first before removal.

In the case of Igor's bikes - I walked the warehouses and I'd estimate that less than 25% of the bikes I saw were intact; there were about 1000 rims though.

Don't the Police auction bikes that are seized? I thought Igor's lot were still being held as evidence.

Report

How do I report an abandoned bike to the city? There has been one on the ring post in front of my house since I moved to it in Feb. 2009 and has clearly not moved once (both tires are flat, rusted, etc)
