Today's Toronto Star editorial cartoon reminded me of this advertisement I saw in a Zeller's catalog earlier this year.

Someone else could possibly write a long-winded sociological essay about how kids are influenced by the behaviours of adults, advertising, media, toys, etc.... but I found it particularly funny (in that "haha that's so wrong!" kind of way) that this cell-phone wielding SUV-driving maniac kid appeared in my Zeller's catalog.

A certain Allderblob'er says it's time to ban car advertising. Maybe we need to go a step further and ban idiocy. Do it for the children!

Two related things happened today:

  1. The Globe & Mail ran a story titled Grow up, cyclists.
  2. The Toronto Cyclists Union website was launched.

Dave Meslin (aka "Mez"), the founder and project coordinator for the Cyclists Union was one of the main focal points of the Globe article. As nice as it is to get press about cycling issues in the city, and get the word out about the new Cyclists Union that it's the works, this article got some major facts wrong and seemed to take a bit of a divisive and inflammatory tone.

Fortunately, Dave is on the case and has already written a rebuttal over at Spacing Toronto. Check it out.

Vic's New Trike
Last night I picked up a used adult tricycle (aka "granny trike") that I found on Craigslist. Yeah, it's not as stylin' as the folding bike crew, but damn this thing is fun to ride!

It's a bit odd riding a bike</strike trike that has three wheels and doesn't lean when cornering. Gotta watch out when riding fast and turning! But it's fun messing around on this thing, taking it up on two wheels, zig-zagging around, and pretending I'm a hyperactive old lady.

I'll probably take this on some grocery-fetching trips instead of my trailer soon. And heck, I think it would be fun to take this on leisurely rides all over the city.

It's too bad though...I actually bought this trike for my mom. I think I'll have a hard time giving it up. She lives in Hamilton, so maybe I can take a nice Saturday and deliver it myself! It's certainly tempting. Who wants to come on a 70km tricycle ride with me?
